Essay Writing
Essays are the mainstay of academic writing, so it is important for students to understand how to organize and write an essay effectively.
Harvard College Writing Center provides information on structure of an essay and how to map an essay. The most basic form of the essay is the Five-Paragraph essay, information on which can be found at the Capital College website. For more information, see Purdue University's OWL essay writing page. Thesis The central part of your essay will be your thesis. For information on the thesis statement, see UNC College of Arts and Technologies' information on thesis statements here. Opposing Views To understand your topic thoroughly, you need to read many sides of the issue. There are a number of places to find information on various facets of your topic. ProCon.org is one place to go for an overview of opposing views on a subject. Our library has access to three databases that explore various points of view (Opposing Viewpoints, Issues and Controversies, and Points of View Reference Center). One of these databases, Opposing Viewpoints, can be accessed through the New York Public Library.
